Law & Order: UK – Episode “Mortal” (Season 7, Episode 5)

The episode opens with the discovery of Jenny Moran, a frail elderly woman, dead in her flat after a break-in. Police initially suspect a burglary gone wrong.
Jenny’s granddaughter, Connie Moran, alerts Detective Sergeant Ronnie Brooks (Bradley Walsh) that Jenny’s live-in caregiver, Cecile Bakama, has disappeared. Cecile claims she was fired for disobedience and accuses Connie of starving Jenny to death. She produces written instructions allegedly ordering her to do so.

As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that Connie, a potential bankrupt, has inherited Jenny’s flat. She is charged with murder. Her lawyer, Vijay Prasad, argues the charge is vague and that Connie could have easily killed her if she wanted to. Connie then testifies that Jenny was in great pain and that she took her own life for relief. Her testimony is convincing, and the prosecution struggles to secure a guilty verdict.

This UK episode is an adaptation of the American Law & Order episode “Golden Years” (Season 4, Episode 11) which aired on January 5th, 1994. In the US version, the defendant pleads guilty to assisted suicide, while in the UK version, the defendant is acquitted.
