You probably know you need to do at least some estate planning, but let’s face it. It’s so easy to procrastinate. After all, it’s not exactly the most fun topic to deal with, there’s no immediate benefit, and we tend to think we have more time to do it.
Here are some estate planning mistakes made by some names you may recognize (Sonny Bono, Jimi Hendrix, Stieg Larsson, Marlon Brando, Princess Diana, Warren Burger, Florence “FloJo” Griffith Joyner, Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson, Doris Duke, Leona Helmsley, Etta James) and what we can learn from them
Estate planning is not something to put off, and you may want to hire an estate planning attorney to make sure you’re not making any big mistakes. Don’t just ask your cousin who’s a criminal defense attorney though. Instead, find a qualified estate planning attorney. If your employer offers a prepaid legal service during open enrollment, that can be a low-cost way to get access to one. Otherwise, you can ask other professionals for referrals, check with your local bar association’s lawyer referral service, or search networks like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys or the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys.
